Microsoft has confirmed a bug affecting the Recycle Bin in Windows 11 after this month’s Patch Tuesday update.
Users have also reported several other problems since the rollout of the June 2026 update earlier this week, including issues with OneDrive access, File Explorer performance, Blue Screen of Death errors, and BitLocker Recovery prompts.
The recycle bin issue is the only bug that Microsoft has officially acknowledged so far. The update in question is KB5095051.
According to Microsoft’s Known Issues page, the Recycle Bin issue appears to be an edge case involving the confirmation dialog, and is not associated with data loss.
Confirmed Recycle Bin bug and other issues reported by users
Users who installed KB5095051 may notice unusual behavior in the Recycle Bin when permanently deleting a single file. Instead of the original file name like realfilename.txt, the confirmation dialog shows a secret internal file name like $Rxxxxx.ext.
This problem is limited to the confirmation prompt; The Recycle Bin window itself continues to display the correct original file name. When restoring a file, it is returned to its original location with the correct name.
Files deleted through the dialog are deleted as expected, so the bug doesn’t cause data loss or major disruption. Microsoft says the solution is available, but only business users can implement it.
System administrators will need to contact Microsoft Support for Business to obtain details on mitigation. Home and other non-business users will have to wait for a future Windows update to receive the official fix.
Microsoft has not officially confirmed these issues, but reports have been widespread on Microsoft’s forums and Reddit since the June update. Users have noted problems with
OneDrive and Dropbox access; On the Microsoft Learn forums, some report having trouble opening OneDrive folders in File Explorer after installing KB5094126. IT administrators on the r/sysadmin subreddit have noticed slow File Explorer performance on hundreds of PCs in their organizations.
Some HP device users have experienced blue screen errors with error code 0xc0430001 after the update. Lenovo users have reported that their PCs freeze under medium workload after applying the update.
Additionally, an IT administrator shared that the update triggered BitLocker recovery on devices with local accounts. A Microsoft support chatbot suggested that the only solution was to wipe the device and reinstall Windows, but this advice should be taken with caution given the reliability of the chatbot.
What Windows 11 users should do about the June 2026 update
For users experiencing serious issues with the June 2026 Update, a system restart can often help clear up temporary errors.
If problems persist, check Settings, then Windows Update, and view update history. Use the Uninstall Updates option to remove the latest updates if necessary.
For those prompted for BitLocker recovery, make sure the recovery key is accessible through a Microsoft account at account.Microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey before attempting further troubleshooting. It is advisable to backup important data before trying any recovery steps.
Users who encounter the Recycle Bin dialog bug can usually ignore it for now, as the files are still deleted correctly even if the file name shown in the confirmation prompt is incorrect.
The problems come shortly after Microsoft highlighted efforts to improve Windows Update reliability, including a recent promise to reduce the number of reboots required after updates.
Despite these initiatives, monthly Patch Tuesday updates continue to come with reliability and compatibility issues.
For example, the May 2026 KB5089549 update caused EFI partition errors on some systems and was eventually rolled back via a known issue rollback.
Microsoft has not yet provided any timeline for permanently fixing the Recycle Bin, only saying that it will come in a future Windows update.
In the meantime, users experiencing serious issues may want to hold off on installing the June 2026 update through Windows Update until Microsoft addresses the broader stability concerns.
