WhatsApp is testing a new log-out option on Android that signs users out of their accounts without deleting messages or settings.
This feature retains chat history and notification preferences on the device, allowing users to log back in without requiring a complete re-setup as before. The update was spotted by WABetaInfo in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android.
This change resolves a long-standing issue where local messages would be deleted when logging out of WhatsApp, making the re-login process slower and less convenient.
How WhatsApp’s new log out option works on Android
Currently, logging out of WhatsApp deletes messages from the device, meaning users need to restore from a backup and reconfigure settings when logging back in.
The new log-out option works the same way as other apps: chat history is preserved on the device, notification settings remain the same, and login credentials are stored locally rather than erased. Re-accessing the account is fast, as the app restores the previous state instantly.
Meta describes this feature as a more flexible alternative to uninstalling the app, especially for users who want to curb data usage or take a break from Messages.
Where to find the new log out option and when will it come into effect
For beta testers who have access to the feature, the Log Out option appears in app settings at the bottom of the account screen. When selected, it starts the sign-out process, which includes a confirmation step before finalizing it.
After confirmation, the account is disconnected from the device, but stored data and access details remain intact. WhatsApp also displays several suggestions to help users avoid logging out in certain situations before completing the process.
Following the release of WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.21.9, the feature is currently being rolled out to some users participating in the WhatsApp beta program, which is available through the Google Play Store beta testing channel.
WhatsApp has not announced when the native log-out option will be available in the stable version of the app, whether it will be offered on iOS, or whether regional availability will vary. Like most beta features, functionality may change prior to wider release.
