Sony Raises PlayStation Plus Essential Prices Starting May 20 | Free Download

Sony has announced that PlayStation Plus Essentials prices will increase starting May 20 for new subscribers, as well as for existing subscribers whose plans change or who have let their subscription expire. The company said the change is due to “ongoing market conditions.”

In the United States, the one-month Essential subscription will increase from $9.99 to $10.99, while in Europe, the price will increase from €9.99 to €10.99. In the UK, it will increase from £7.99 to £8.99. These changes represent an increase of approximately 10 percent.

The price of a three-month subscription will also increase from $24.99 to $27.99 in the US, from €27.99 to €30.99 in Europe, and from £21.99 to £24.99 in the UK. This amount represents an increase of roughly 12 percent.

What about the 12-month PlayStation Plus Essentials plan?

Sony’s announcement doesn’t explicitly say that the required 12-month subscription is changing. The current price of $79.99 per year remains the best value across the three available periods. Subscription providers often aim to keep users locked into long-term plans at stable prices, and the wording implies that the annual plan is not affected for the time being.

What’s actually included in PS Plus Essentials

PlayStation Plus Essentials provides subscribers with online multiplayer access, exclusive discounts at the PlayStation Store, Share Play, cloud save storage, and a selection of free games each month. The larger, more stable PS Plus game catalog is not included in the Essential tier and is only available with the Extra and Premium plans.

The price increases reflect a broader trend of rising costs in gaming. Nintendo recently raised the price of the Switch 2 by $50 in several regions starting September 1st. Sony has also increased the prices of the PS5 console. Last week, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki said that another increase in the price of PS5 hardware is not currently planned, although he did not guarantee that prices will not change in the future.

Sony did not specify when market conditions might allow prices to remain stable or go down. In the meantime, existing PS Plus subscribers will retain their current price until they decide to change or cancel their subscription.
