OpenAI is launching Health in ChatGPIT for US users, enabling connections to Apple Health and supported medical records so ChatGPT can reference health information during conversations.
According to OpenAI, connected medical records, Apple Health data, and related conversations are not used for model training or advertising.
The feature is now available to logged-in US users aged 18 and older on the Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans on web and iOS, accessible from the ChatGPT sidebar.
Health is not currently available in the codex. Users can still ask health-related questions without connecting any data.
What does Health do in ChatGPIT and what are the models behind health conversations
With the user’s permission, ChatGPT can access linked information such as medications, lab results, recent visits, sleep, and activity. It can compare new results with previous tests, summarize changes since the last appointment, or link sleep, activity, and workouts to routines. OpenAI says the feature is intended to reduce, not replace, repetitive data entry and support from medical professionals.
OpenAI reports that more than 300 million people use ChatGPT each week for health-related questions, often with relevant information spanning patient portals, records, apps, and wearable devices.
Earlier this year, OpenAI introduced a dedicated health experience for a limited group of users, which required a separate space in ChatGPT.
OpenAI notes that more than 70% of health-related conversations occurred outside of this location, creating the ability to reference health-related information in all conversations.
The Health section in the sidebar remains the place to add and manage information, view trends, browse synced records, and revisit past Health conversations.
OpenAI says GPT-5.5 Instant, available on a free plan, is better at identifying when urgent care may be needed, requesting relevant context, explaining uncertainty, and simplifying complex information.
GPT-5.6 Sol, available to paid users, is described as OpenAI’s most advanced health model, with superior performance on tasks requiring complex reasoning.
OpenAI collaborates with hundreds of physicians to develop health scenarios and assessment rubrics for accuracy, safety, communication, context awareness, completeness, and enhancement.
The company reports that all GPT-5.6 models outperformed GPT-5.5 on HealthBench Professional, its evaluation for challenging health tasks.
OpenAI emphasizes that ChatGPT can still make mistakes and does not replace qualified medical professionals, encouraging users to verify important information with a healthcare provider.
Privacy and data control: how to connect and access health information
OpenAI says Health is built with layered privacy and security safeguards. All ChatGPT conversations are encrypted at rest and in transit, and associated information in health receives additional encryption.
Connected medical records and Apple Health information, and interactions using them, are excluded from Foundation model training and ad targeting, regardless of the user’s model-training settings.
Conversations that do not use this data follow the user’s standard model-training settings, adjustable in Settings, then Data Controls.
By default, ChatGPT requests permission before using connected records to personalize responses. Users can accept each request or choose to always allow access, which disables prompts by adjusting settings under Plugins and Health.
Users can disconnect health information at any time in Health under Account. OpenAI says that data from a disconnected source is removed from its systems within 30 days, although information already in conversation histories persists until those conversations are deleted.
Memories are not created directly from linked medical records or Apple Health information. Users can use temporary chats or disable memory in Settings under Memory.
OpenAI says that before ChatGPT takes actions in any other connected plugins that could disclose health information, additional security measures verify that the sharing matches the request, and some sensitive actions require confirmation.
Users who want feedback based on their data can connect to supported medical records from Apple Health, US Hospital Systems, One Medical, or Function Health.
- Open Health from the sidebar or more menu in ChatGPT, select “Get Started” and follow the guided connection process.
- Allow information to sync, which may take a few minutes to allow the information to sync. You can connect additional accounts during or after syncing. Confirm that data sharing is enabled on Apple Health, as ChatGPT can only use what those apps make available through Apple Health. Some proprietary scores may not be transferred.
- Review associated conditions and medications, remove those that are no longer relevant, and add missing details, including family health history.
- Update older entries, as linked information may not always be fresh, and verify important details against the original source.
Once synced, users can ask questions anywhere in ChatGPT and add @Health to the message to explicitly request health context.
Health in ChatGPIT is now available on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans on web and iOS for US users 18 and older. OpenAI has not announced availability outside the US, support across codecs, or an Android release timeline.
Connected information may not always be complete or current. OpenAI advises users to verify important details with the original source and consult a healthcare provider for medical decisions.
