According to estimates from Alinea Analytics, GTA 5 has sold an estimated 1.8 million copies on PS5 so far in 2026, including 387,000 copies on PlayStation in May alone.
The game’s consistently strong sales, despite being released more than a decade ago, demonstrate the financial runway that has allowed Rockstar to delay GTA 6 multiple times while still generating revenue.
The PS5 sales figure is in line with Take-Two’s financial reports, which regularly note about 5 million additional units sold per quarter across all platforms.
When accounting for sales on PS4, PC, and both Xbox generations, the estimate of 1.8 million for PS5 fits within that broader total.
Top PS5 Games of May 2026
Alinea’s estimates for May list GTA 5 as the fifth best-selling PS5 game of the month. The absolute top five according to estimated units sold included:
- 007 First Light with a million copies,
- Minecraft with 788,000,
- Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight with 757,000,
- EA Sports FC 26, with 411,000
- GTA 5 with 387,000.
How GTA Online revenue and ongoing GTA 5 sales are funding GTA 6
Beyond just unit sales, GTA Online is also making a huge amount of money from microtransactions. While specific figures are rarely revealed, leaks suggest that the game makes approximately $8.4 million every week.
Another leak from Rockstar indicates that about 97 percent of GTA Online’s revenue comes from the console versions. This could be one of the reasons why a PC release for GTA 6 has not been confirmed yet. The continued strong sales of GTA 5 and the continued revenue from GTA Online have provided Rockstar with a surprisingly long financial runway.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has repeatedly stressed that Rockstar’s goal is to “deliver perfection” with GTA 6, and the company has committed significant financial, creative, and human resources to support this goal.
Such an extended development process is unusual in the industry, where most studios face pressure to release products on a strict schedule. GTA 6 is currently scheduled for console launch on November 19, 2026. The PC version has not been officially confirmed.
GTA 6 sales expectations are high. One industry analyst has estimated that the game could sell 45 million copies on PS5 within its first week.
Additionally, an analysis of Rockstar North’s financial documents reveals that the studio has spent over two billion dollars on development.
